Rapid Prediction of Leaf Water Content in Eucalypt Leaves Using a Handheld NIRS Instrument

Leaf water content (LWC) is a crucial physiological parameter that plays limiting role in the efficiency of photosynthesis and biomass production many plants. This study investigated use diffuse reflectance near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for rapid prediction gravimetric LWC eucalypt leaves from Eucalyptus Corymbia genera. The best-performing model gave R2pred 0.85 RMSEP 2.32% an independent test set, indicating handheld NIR instrument could predict with high level accuracy. support vector regression slightly more accurate results compared partial least squares regression. Prediction models were also developed leaf thickness, although these somewhat less (R2pred 0.58; 2.7 µm). Nevertheless, suggest instruments may be useful in-field screening thickness Australian species. As example its use, method was applied analysis every found on E. populnea sapling.
